Temperaments

If you know me at ALL, you probably have noticed I say stuff like, "He is such a phlegmatic" or "Do you think you are a sanguine or choleric?". Or that I have collaborated with other individuals to interrogate you about your personality. What's more, you may have asked me to give an explanation and watched me stare at you and say, "Whaa...? You don't know what I am saying?" (I apologize for such behavior). Now, if you were lucky enough to actually get a somewhat decent explanation out of me, congratulations. However for those who are still in the dark, here is a brief explanation:

Sanguine, phlegmatic, choleric, and melancholic are 4 different temperaments. They are like categories for your personality. Each one has its own strengths and weaknesses. They were originally thought of by Hippocrates to explain the differences in people's personalities. People have a primary temperament and a secondary.  I find that knowing your temperament and other people's helps explain their actions and the motives behind them. I used to wonder quite often whether or not everyone in the world would react to certain situations like I did. When my mom had me do this test, it explained a lot to me. I am a Sanguine-Choleric-Phlegmatic, my choleric and phlegmatic traits being extremely close in number.

Choleric:

Cholerics are extroverts and focused, self-motivated leaders. They are strong-willed and love to be in charge. They are good at making decisions and motivating others. They are logical and learn easily. They do not easily show emotions. They can come off as incredibly harsh, domineering, stubborn, emotionless, and direct. They can offend people. Their opposing temperament is the phlegmatic. My mom, sister Danielle, Colman F., Jimmi, Mary, and Dani are choleric.

Melancholics:

Melancholics are the most introverted personality and are perfectionists. They like having everything organized and pay a painstaking amount of attention to detail. They appreciate music and art. They love to analyze and are very self-disciplined. It is very difficult for this temperament to make friends and they prefer one on one time with someone. Melancholics are known for holding grudges and have a tendency to be depressed. They normally excel at schoolwork and are driven to succeed. Their opposing temperament is the sanguine. I know of a few melancholics, my brother Evan and my friends Rachel G., Keegan, Logan, Erika, and Caitlin.

Sanguines:

Ah. This is my temperament. Sanguines are the most extroverted personality and are known as the "life of the party".  They love being the center of attention and make friends easily. They are funny, imaginative, enthusiastic, creative, and like to promote new ideas. They are light-hearted and forgive easily. Sanguines wear their emotions on their sleeves. They love to talk and are very affectionate people. They have rather unfortunate weakness. They can be vain, air headed, and easily distracted. They can tend to dominate a conversation, excluding other less extroverted people. They are impulsive and can be brassy and opinionated. It is difficult for people to take people with this temperament seriously because of their light-hearted behavior. Sanguines are not fond of conflict and try to keep harmony in daily life. Their opposing temperament is the melancholic. My friends Laramie, Dominick, Casey, and I are the only sanguines that I know of.

Phlegmatics:

Phlegmatics fill my life. They are introverted (but not as much as the melancholic). They are polite, dependable, and even-tempered. They have a dry wit and are the ultimate conflict haters. They will take the blame unjustly just to keep the peace. They are very patient, reliable, quiet, and gentle people. Phlegmatics have a major desire to please others. They do not reveal their emotions to others easily. They find it difficult to trust others but are extremely loyal to their friends. They react slowly, are indecisive, can be lazy, can withdraw if to many demands are made, and need structure. All in all, they are really pleasant people to be around in my opinion. Their opposing temperament is the choleric. My best friend Kat, my dad, and my friends Freddy, Peyton, John, and Michael are phlegmatic. I suspect many more of my friends who haven't taken the test are also phlegmatic.

Now, according to the books I have read, your opposing temperament is supposed to be your perfect opposite (like the saying "opposites attract"). My parents are an example of this. My mom is choleric and my dad a phlegmatic and they get along REALLY well. I seem to get along pretty well with melancholic boys (sort of). Freddy and I have formulated a hypothesis that people with backwards temperaments dislike each other. Like a sanguine-choleric doesn't get along with a choleric-sanguine or a melancholic-phlegmatic dislikes a phlegmatic-melancholic. We kind of went through all of our friends who dislike each other and it works together. Maybe it's just a coincidence.

So anyway, when I have nothing to do, I sit around and theorize who has what temperament. I'd greatly appreciate it if you'd take one of the tests below and either comment below or email me and tell me what your result is.
